Armstrong Ford Dam Removal Feasibility Study
Background
The Armstrong Ford Dam is a low head spillway dam that was constructed in 1926 to serve as the foundation for the bridge across the South Fork River between what is now Cramerton and Belmont. Earlier this year, Catawba Riverkeeper, with support from the Town of Cramerton, City of Belmont, and Gaston County engaged Wildlands Engineering to complete a feasibility study to determine the impacts on water quality, flood resiliency, wildlife, and recreational access of removing the dam. This project is in alignment with the stated goals of the South Fork Collective to find ways to improve the water quality, flood resiliency, and recreational access of the South Fork River.
